The India Canada rift has started once again for the same reason before, but this time the impact/fight is bigger. The rift has gained attention from all parts of the world. Statements from formal and informal sources have been circulating continuously after both the countries issued the top high commission officials to go back to their countries.
Background around the conflict
It all started with murder of one of the Sikh leader from British Columbia, Nijjar, last year in 2023. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is since claiming to have evidences which states clear involvement of Indian government officials and their agents involved in the murder. Nijjar was holding a Canadian citizenship at that time meaning he was a Canadian citizen, who was murdered in Canada.
This back and forth between the two counties, trying to establish their claims have now taken a bigger shape and is now a heated topic for not only just these two countries but for the whole world.
Impact to the Economies
One of the prominent effects this rift might have or could be the reason why still the two countries have not totally boycotted each other would be the trade between the two countries. There used to be billions of dollars exchanging hands in the name of trades and businesses, but now things have changed and constant diversions are happening to avoid non-critical trades and postponing transactions.
For Canada, this could turn out to be a really scary move, especially given the size and magnitude of the Indian economy and people. Apart from the Indian business and trades Canada have, a number of International students from India also supports the Canadian economy which might get taken away in the blink of an eye given India take stricter measures.
Effects on Immigration and Education
From quite some time Canada has been a country of choice for Indian immigrants and international students. Currently Canada is home to one of the largest Indian communities in the world with a major population of Indians contributing to their economical and system framework.
This latest rift between the two countries can possibly impact critical immigration services such as visa services, visa approvals, and country specific immigration policies. Ultimately people or students, who are already struggling, will be the ones who will suffer the most.
As a result, fresher talent and skilled people will refrain to go to Canada causing a serious damage to the Canadian economy and society in the longer run.
Social and Cultural Effects
Since Canada has one of the biggest Indian community after India itself, the recent incidents has shattered and impacted the sentiments of the community bringing social and cultural agony. The allegations, followed by the actions has created a great divide and suffering for the Indian community in Canada.
The depth of the concerns is so high that it will leave a long lasting impact on the Canadian society which will impact not just the Indian communities but also all other populations collectively denting the diversity and cultural heritage of Canada that they are proud of.
